Wall Street Breakfast: Must-Know News
Health insurers relieved over Obama proposal. Obama unveiled his healthcare proposal, which includes a Medicare tax on capital gains and would cost $950B over 10 years. The proposal could put pressure on health insurers but those with significant Medicare plans, including Humana (HUM) and UnitedHealth (UNH), actually gained in yesterday's trading following a better-than-expected decision on government payment rates for private Medicare plans. If approved, the legislation could also put pressure on makers of generic and brand-name drugs, whil

American Capital: Caveat Emptor
Nicholas Marshi submits:What is going on at American Capital (ACAS)? We have to admit to being confused by the latest developments . Just when it seemed like the former BDC behemoth was about to finally close its debt with its lenders, the deadline has been pushed off till March 15, 2010. Still left open is the possibility that ACAS will file a prepackaged bankruptcy so that the Company can go quickly in and out of the courts. (See Reuters article here.) At the same time, ACAS is asking shareholders for the right to issue up to 58mn more share

American Capital: Restructuring Almost Completed
Nicholas Marshi submits:Back in November 2009 American Capital (ACAS) suggested a deal with its lenders and senior note holders was almost completed. Admittedly, the terms of the package were very, very expensive and required a repayment schedule which might or might not out to be a problem. Certainly shareholders had little to crow about except that there was a path out of the uncertainty that has plagued American Capital all through 2009. Then we heard nothing for weeks. Then, last Friday ACAS filed an 8-K with the SEC reporting that the dea

BDC Stocks Down, American Capital Up: Why?
Nicholas Marshi submits:As a post this is going to be short on length and conclusions. We have a long standing position in American Capital (ACAS) (sadly with a relatively average cost) so we follow the vagaries of the company's stock price. Just a few days ago ACAS was around $2.5. In fact, the lowest point was $2.4 on New Year's Eve. Since then the stock has been up every day. Yesterday it was up to $3.3, on a day when virtually all the other BDCs were in the red. What's happening here ?We have two theories:Complete Story »
