Multi-Purpose HBO Gift DVDs Can Also Be Used For Telling Co-Workers How You Really Feel
A holiday-themed ad for HBO features a man telling his co-workers what he really thinks about them through his choice of DVD box set gifts. The HBO series Sex & The City once inspired viewers in droves to define themselves as being a Carrie or a Samantha or one of the other leading ladies. (I would’ve probably been a Miranda, for instance, but don’t hold me to it.) Deciding which characters were most representative revealed something about how well people knew the show, and how well the show knew them. A new ad for the pre

Nokia Execs Talk Tablet Plans, Microsoft Surface
Nokia has desperately tried to create a product that excites both consumers and shareholders. But so far, the struggling Finnish device maker has failed to do so: The beautiful Lumia 900 smartphone barely moved the needle, and even after Wednesday's much-anticipated unveiling of the Lumia 920, Nokia's share price tumbled more than 10%.
"We're looking at the tablet space. It's a growing category. It's a natural companion to smartphones."
So perhaps now is exactly when Nokia needs to start thinking bigger. Specifically, to start thinking about

This Week In Bots: Will Robots Cause Even More Human Unemployment?
Bot Vid: NASA's Moon ProbeNASA, the Automaton blog tells us, is busy testing a new device called the Regolith and Environment Science and Oxygen and Lunar Volatiles Extraction, destined to one day be used by robots on the Moon. The device, RESOLVE for short, is designed to drill and sample the lunar surface intelligently looking for water sources. Water will be an invaluable resource on the Moon because it can help sustain a human colony there and may even be useful to act as a rocket propellant. A joint effort with Canada's space agency, the m

Pooch Power: What Dog-Friendly Workplaces Can Do For Your Business
Meet Louie, the slobbery, four-legged officemate who taught us a few things about how to work better. No offense to any of my former bipedal colleagues out there, but the best coworker I've ever had is a puppy. Let me tell you why.
For the last five months, I’ve shared my home office with a yellow labrador retriever named Louie (pictured, top and right) and, yes, he's the cutest thing on earth. I can also genuinely say that he’s taught me a lot about how I work and how I should work.
The benefits of animal companionship are pretty well s

Market Thoughts and Apple!
Well it has been five days since I've blogged and even longer since a podcast or audioboo. Where does the time go?The market has had a bad day and a good day this week. Lets start with yesterday, as the market ramped up at the open due to the Spain "getting a new credit card" news. Of course, the market sold off later. Whether it was a sell the news on Apple's WWDC or a realization that more debt in Spain won't cure the problems of huge debt due to entitlement spending, the market tanked into the close. But then, today happened. Reason du j

Bill Nguyen Announces Color's Partnership With Verizon
The video-sharing firm improves its service by adding audio. Will it be enough to bring it back from the dead?Color, the much-hyped photo-sharing app created by serial entrepreneur Bill Nguyen that famously nabbed $41 million in funding then promptly flopped, is back with a scheme to tap the giant pool of users it needs to survive.Nguyen has unveiled a partnership with Verizon to provide exclusive features to 4G LTE customers. But can such an agreement save Color? The service was built on the idea that lots of people would share with lots of ot

Social Security Statements Now Online
Smart Money mentioned that Social Security statements are now online. The statements always make for interesting viewing so I took a look at mine. My benefit at 67 is slated to be $2459 per month and at 70 it would go up to $3103. My wife will get 50% of my payout. So at some point we could be getting $4600/month in today's dollars which sounds great; this is way more than we need to spend to get by every month, way more. Of course this will change depending on how much our health insurance goes up in the future, but I don't think it will go fro

I first heard the word “grinfucker” a decade or so ago from a close friend who was a former investment banker. He said, in response to a meeting we were in with a person who was very polite and charming “he’s such a grinfucker.” I loved the word and, as I found out later, it described the person perfectly.
I had an encounter with someone on Friday that made me think to myself “that person is a grinfucker” and I vaguely remembered a post on the web from someone about grinfuckers. A quick Google search ge
