Catching up on HQ Sustainable Maritime (HQSM.OB)
Is HQ Sustainable Maritime (HQSM.OB) (articles) building a substantial base for another move up, or is it just flatlining?Let's recap recent corporate events:June 15, 2006: HQSM registers for resale over 49M shares of common stock underlying its convertible stock and notes. It appears that something less than all these shares will likely be issued, but the dilution will still be substantial.June 28, 2006: HQSM announces that it has acquired the assets of Pacific Supreme Seafoods, a U.S. seafood distributor. Trond Ringstad, former owner of P

Quick hits -- the earnings edition
IBSG International (IGII.OB) (articles) reported first quarter earnings of $112,000, down from $150,000 in the prior year. My bigger concern with the company is cash flow. If it starts collecting on that receivable, it will get interesting. If not, I'll stay away.NewMarket Technology (NMKT.OB) (articles) announced preliminary Q1 earnings of over $400k, up about 300% year-over-year on $17.3 million in revenue. Solid, but not phenomenal. I'd like to see the company progress on some of the corporate moves it has discussed: (1) spinoffs of cer

Quick Hits
Scaling out is central to my strategy. I generally scale out in thirds, taking the first chunk at 25-30% profit and the second chunk around 100% if I am fortunate enough to get there. I use a chandelier, or volatility-based trailing stop, on the last chunk. That keeps me in the game if one of my stocks turns in to the next PTSC. On Friday, the chandelier stop was triggered for two of my stocks. I bid adeiu to the remainder of my positions in Littlefield Corp. (LTFD.OB) (articles) and KSW Inc. (KSW) (articles). Nice runs while they lasted.L

A tale of two earnings reports (NMKT.OB, HQSM.OB)
Two companies I follow closely reported intraday today, NewMarket Technology (NMKT.OB) (articles) and HQ Sustainable Maritime (HQSM.OB) (articles). The NMKT report is here, and the HQSM report is here.Rather than give you my comments on the earnings, I thought I'd just post the intraday charts. In both cases, the market has spoken. That reaction is far more important than any insight I could bring to the table.DISCLOSURE: I am long NMKT.OB and HQSM.OB (sell order pending on the latter). Not a recommendation to buy or sell any security. F

IBSG International (IGII.OB) (articles) today announced an expansion of its Johannesburg contract to cover all of South Africa. According to the press release, IBSG expects the contract to yield $50M in revenues over four years, with initial revenue of $7.1 million. Part of the contract is likely to be funded by heavyweight BAE Systems. BAE is a shareholder in Global Eagle, IBSG's South African partner. Although this announcement is positive, I still have some questions about this stock. IBSG will need to back up the revenue announcements

Will increasing focus on fish toxicity help HQSM?
Is the public starting to pay attention to mercury and PCBs found in many types of fish? This article, kindly forwarded by reader Brian, suggests that may be the case. Week in Review: China Small-Caps on Fire (CAAS, CESV, CHID, CHNR, CTDC, HQSM, JADE, JRJC, NINE, NWD)
A number of Chinese small-cap companies enjoyed substantial gains last week. Why the run-up? Is this a herd mentality buying anything China as some are suggesting? What do you think will happen this week? Any companies on your radar screen?
Here is a look at the performances of some of those Chinese companies that rallied [...]
